Stackable Washer-Dryer Cabinet Solutions

Stackable washer-dryer combinations are the go-to solution for homes where laundry space is limited. By using vertical space instead of horizontal, they free up valuable floor area for cabinets, folding surfaces, and storage. Here is how to design cabinetry that maximizes the potential of a stacked laundry setup.

Enclosure vs Open Installation

You can install a stacked washer-dryer within a built-in cabinet enclosure or leave it freestanding with cabinetry alongside. Cabinet enclosures create a clean, integrated look and can include doors that completely conceal the appliances. Open installations are easier to service and provide better ventilation but look less polished.

If you choose an enclosure, ensure the cabinet interior dimensions provide at least 2-3cm clearance on each side and 5cm behind the appliances for ventilation, vibration clearance, and hose connections.

Ventilation Requirements

Proper ventilation is critical for stacked dryer installations. The dryer needs a clear exhaust path to the exterior of the home. Design the cabinet enclosure with an opening or channel for the dryer vent duct. Do not restrict airflow around the dryer, as trapped heat reduces efficiency and creates a fire hazard. Heat pump dryers that do not require external venting are increasingly popular for enclosed installations.

Cabinet Configurations Around Stacked Units

The space beside and above stacked washer-dryers is prime cabinet territory. Common configurations include:

  • Side tower cabinet: A full-height cabinet beside the stacked units provides pantry-style storage for detergent, cleaning supplies, and household items. Pull-out shelves make deep cabinets more accessible.
  • Above-unit cabinet: If the ceiling height allows, install a shallow cabinet above the stacked units for infrequently used items. Keep this cabinet's depth shallow (no more than 30cm) for safe access.
  • Counter extension: Extend a countertop from an adjacent base cabinet to create a folding and sorting surface beside the stacked units.
  • Pull-out hamper cabinet: A cabinet with a pull-out hamper beside the washer makes loading laundry convenient and keeps dirty laundry out of sight.

Closet Laundry Installations

Many homes hide the stacked washer-dryer in a hallway or bedroom closet. For these installations, bifold or barn-style doors conceal the appliances when not in use. A shelf above the unit stores supplies. Retractable clotheslines or fold-down drying racks on the closet door interior provide hang-dry space. Small rolling carts that fit beside the units provide mobile storage that can be pulled out during use.

Bathroom Laundry Combinations

In apartments and smaller homes, the laundry area often shares space with a bathroom. Design cabinetry that integrates the stacked washer-dryer into the bathroom's overall aesthetic. Use matching cabinet materials and finishes. Position the stacked units in a dedicated enclosure at one end of the bathroom with doors that match the bathroom cabinetry style. Include a fold-down shelf above the washer for placing laundry items.

Utility Room Configurations

When the laundry area is part of a larger utility room, the stacked washer-dryer frees half the usual appliance footprint for other uses. Use the reclaimed floor space for a broom closet, additional storage cabinets, a utility sink, or a pet washing station. The freed wall space beside the stacked units can accommodate a pegboard for tools and cleaning equipment.

Electrical and Plumbing Considerations

Plan your cabinet layout around existing utility connections. The stacked units need access to water supply, drain, and electrical or gas connections. Position these connections so they remain accessible for maintenance without removing cabinetry. Shut-off valves should be reachable. Consider installing a water leak sensor and automatic shut-off valve behind the units for added protection.
