Wardrobes — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about custom wardrobe sourcing and international procurement.

What types of wardrobes can I source from Chinese manufacturers?

Chinese factories produce hinged-door wardrobes, sliding-door wardrobes, walk-in closet systems, and open wardrobe units. You can choose from built-in designs meant to be installed wall-to-wall or freestanding units. Most factories offer internal configurations with adjustable shelves, hanging rods, pull-out drawers, trouser racks, and accessory trays. The level of customization is typically very high, with made-to-measure dimensions at no extra charge.

What materials are used for wardrobe carcasses and doors?

Carcasses are usually 18mm particle board or plywood with melamine finish. Door options include melamine-faced board, PVC-wrapped MDF, lacquered MDF, solid wood, glass with aluminum frames, and leather-upholstered panels. For sliding doors, aluminum or steel track systems are standard. Premium wardrobes may use 25mm thick boards for extra rigidity and a more substantial feel.

How are wardrobes shipped — assembled or flat-packed?

Wardrobes are almost always shipped flat-packed due to their large size. Each panel is individually wrapped, and all hardware, cam locks, and assembly instructions are included. Factories number each panel and provide a layout diagram for on-site assembly. A skilled installer can assemble a standard wardrobe in two to four hours. If you need fully assembled units, this is only practical for smaller freestanding pieces.

Can I customize the interior layout of each wardrobe unit?

Absolutely. Most factories work from your interior layout drawings or can propose configurations based on the wardrobe dimensions and your storage needs. You can specify hanging section heights, drawer quantities, shelf spacing, and accessory inserts. Some factories use proprietary software to generate optimized layouts. Provide clear drawings or annotated photos of your preferred arrangement to avoid miscommunication.

What door mechanisms are available for sliding wardrobes?

Common options include top-hung roller systems and bottom-track roller systems. Top-hung systems offer smoother operation and are easier to clean since there is no floor track to collect dust. Soft-close dampers are available for both types. For large or heavy doors, look for systems rated for the appropriate weight capacity. Hettich, Hafele, and Raumplus are popular premium track brands available from Chinese suppliers.

How do I handle measurements for built-in wardrobes?

Accurate site measurements are critical for built-in wardrobes. Measure wall-to-wall width at three heights (floor, middle, ceiling), floor-to-ceiling height at three points, and check walls for plumb. Provide these dimensions to the factory with a tolerance note. Most factories will manufacture panels 5 to 10mm smaller than the opening to allow for fitting adjustments and filler strips on site.

What is the price range for custom wardrobes from China?

Pricing typically ranges from $80 to $250 per square meter of front-face area for mid-range quality. Premium wardrobes with lacquer finishes, glass doors, or solid wood can reach $300 to $500 per square meter. This pricing usually includes internal fittings and hardware but excludes shipping. A 3-meter wide, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe might cost $800 to $3,000 FOB depending on material and finish choices.

Can factories match a specific color from a paint brand like Benjamin Moore or Farrow & Ball?

Yes, most lacquer factories can color-match using Pantone codes, RAL codes, or NCS codes. Provide the exact code rather than a color name, since names vary between paint systems. The factory will produce a spray-out sample on the actual substrate for your approval before production. Keep in mind that lacquer finishes may appear slightly different from wall paint due to the sheen level and underlying material.

Are LED lighting systems available for integration into wardrobes?

Many factories offer integrated LED strip lighting, sensor-activated lights that turn on when doors open, and shelf-mounted spotlights. LED profiles can be recessed into shelving or mounted along hanging rods. Specify the voltage standard for your country (110V or 220V) and whether you need a plug-in transformer or hardwire connection. Most systems use low-voltage LED strips fed by a driver that accepts local mains voltage.

How do I handle warranty claims on wardrobes sourced from overseas?

Negotiate warranty terms before ordering and get them in writing. Typical warranties cover structural defects for 3 to 5 years and hardware for 1 to 2 years. For minor issues, factories often send replacement parts at no cost. For major defects, document the problem with photos and videos and file a claim promptly. Having a third-party inspection before shipping significantly reduces the chance of receiving defective units.
